A counter is an aggressive reply to an opponent's speed-up. Instead of blocking, you take the fast ball and redirect it with pace, usually at the attacker's body or through the gap between opponents.
Countering is a fast-hands skill. The paddle must already be up and out in front, and the motion is a short punch or flick, never a swing.
Key cues
- 1Paddle up and ready before the speed-up
- 2Compact punch, contact in front
- 3Redirect, do not overswing
- 4Target the body or the middle
Common mistakes
- Countering balls that are too low, which sends them into the net
- Big swings that arrive late
- Trying to counter from a defensive stance
